COVID-19 Vaccines Not Tied to Sudden Hearing Loss: Study

Amid anecdotal reports showing a link between COVID-19 vaccines and sudden hearing loss in some people, a new study has reported that there appears to be no evidence for such a link with any of the approved vaccines. 

Researchers analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) and noted that the incidence of sudden onset hearing loss was not increased. Additionally, they noted that it might even be slightly lower than expected during the first few weeks following vaccination. 

Researchers looked at the reports of sudden hearing loss, noted within 21 days after vaccination, logged in VAERS. They reviewed only those reports where a doctor had diagnosed sudden hearing loss, leaving 555 cases from December 2020 through July 2021. On dividing the reports by the total vaccine doses administered in the United States over that period, they noted an incidence rate of 0.6 cases of sudden hearing loss per 100,000 individuals. However, on dividing all cases of hearing loss logged in the VAERS database (2170) by the number of people who had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, the incidence rate was 28 per 100,000 individuals.
